MARKETS FOR THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMERS INTO THE 21ST-CENTURY
The thermoplastic elastomer market will reach the near-US$ 3 billion level globally in 1995, and both the elastomers and plastics industries are expecting evolutionary uses of these products over a wide range of applications. More than 30 percent of that will be used in western Europe. Total consumption will reach 1 million tons worldwide, with the transportation-related industries providing the seeds for most of the growth. In 1994, the usage of TPEs in automotive applications was expected to total US$ 256 million. Future growth in these markets should exceed 7% per year through 1997. The increase in the number of vehicle units produced in North America and Europe, combined with the emerging industries in China and the Pacific Rim will help to boost the usage of TPEs. Other major growth markets for thermoplastic elastomers includes medical, which will grow 10% annually in the United States; sporting goods, including membranes for soccer balls and basket-balls; and appliances, where consumers are seeking personal-care items that have a ''soft-touch'' feel.
