Development of an elastomeric material based on EPDM for the use in thermal solar collectors
The use of solar energy can be improved by applying a new developed elastomer metal absorber. In comparision to common absorbers the main advantage results from its inherent freeze resistance. permanent installed thermal solar collectors are usually filled with a liquid mixture of water and glycol to avoid damage due to freezing of the water. The here presented elastomer metal absorber operates with pure water without any antifreeze. This results from the elastic properties of the elastomeric fluid pipes, To improve the thermal conductivity of the EPDM compound a high amount of heat conductive fillers, e.g. metal or graphite powder is used. Additionally a conductive carbon black is applied to achieve the required strength at operation pressure. A prototype collector has been investigated by thermal efficiency measurements. The thermal performance comes close to that of common flat plate collectors.
