New biotechnological use of natural rubber - Immobilisation of yeast cells for alcohol production
Immobilisation of yeast cells in natural rubber coagulum enabled the fermentation reaction from molasses to ethanol to be repeatedly continued without diminution in yield over a three month period. The study shows that alcohol manufacture can be simplified eliminating yeast culturing techniques presently employed. NR is inert compared to alginate and the simpler immobilising procedure described has potential application for enzymic reactions using alginate.
