Admicellar Polymerization of Polystyrene on Glass-Fibers
A preliminary investigation into an experimental technique, using surfactants, for producing organized thin polystyrene films on glass fibers has been performed. The thin-film polymerization process occurs in three steps, namely, the formation of surfactant admicelles, the partitioning of the styrene monomer into the admicelles, and the in situ polymerization of the absorbed monomer. Treated fibers have been observed using scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the film formation. The micrographs showed a nonuniform coating on the fiber surface. Fibers were also subjected to a THF extraction process that confirmed the formation of polystyrene. Experiments conducted also revealed that polymerization was not restricted to the admicelles and that some polymerization occurred in the supernatant as well.
