Structures of polystyrene-block-poly(2-cinnamoylethyl methacrylate) films deposited on mica surfaces from block-selective solvents
In dilute solutions of tetrahydrofuran (THF)/cyclopentane (CP) with CP volume fractions between 50% and 86%, polystyrene-block-poly(2-cinnamoylethyl methacrylate), PS-b-PCEMA, forms spherical micelles with PS corona and PCEMA core. When contacted with mica, the PS-b-PCEMA samples are adsorbed first as micellar particles. The micelles then deform, fuse, and rearrange to farm a monolayer with PCEMA in contact with mica and PS in contact with the solvent. The more surprising result has been on the observation of multilayer deposition from PS-b-PCEMA samples with approximately equal PS and PCEMA block lengths. This multilayer deposition phenomenon occurs in THF/CP with different CP contents-and deserves a theoretical rationalization.
