Nematic elastomers display the elasticity of conventional solids, liquid crystals, and entirely new effects due to the influence of strain in altering the ordering direction. We point out the most direct ways in which experiment can confront the molecular theories of temperature-induced shape changes and instabilities in the nematic director induced by large elastic strains. Experiments on nematic monodomain elastomers are examined critically, and suggestions for future experiments are made.
