The Effect of Nanoscale Microstructures on the Mechanical-Behavior of Silicon-Carbon Titanium-Carbon Composites
The effect of a nanostructure on hardness, toughness and crack propagation is investigated in the case of SiC-TiC nanocomposites. Toughness values of these nanocomposites are always higher than for classical monolithic SiC, and increase with the ratio TiC/(TiC+SiC) as the hardness. Moreover, the nanomorphology affects crack propagation because the large number of grain boundaries.
