Isothermal section of the phase diagram uranium-titanium-germanium at 1000 degrees C
The phase relations for the uranium-titanium-germanium system were determined from 25 samples by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and quantitative electron probe microanalysis. Two ternary compounds were discovered: U2Ti3Ge4, which crystallizes with the U2Mo3Si4 structure type (monoclinic, P21/c, a = 7.161(9), b = 7.136(6), c = 7.039(6) Angstrom, beta = 109.9(1)), and U3TiGe5, which crystallizes with the U3TiSb5 structure type (hexagonal, P63/mcm, a = 8.4955(4), c = 5.711(1) Angstrom). The zirconium-containing compound U2Zr3Ge4 was also identified, with the monoclinic structure type (a = 7.339(7), b = 7.317(5), c = 7.123(4) Angstrom, beta = 109.8(1)). Magnetic measurements performed on polycrystalline samples showed magnetic order for all of these ternary phases at low temperature. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
