A synthetic pathway is described which leads to the formation of pyrrole with a pendant aromatic groups in the beta-position. Such materials are found to exhibit a monotropic liquid crystal phase. Beta-substituted pyrroles of this type may be polymerised chemically to form poly(beta-substituted pyrroles).
