Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) with the formula C(X)Ln(NH3)(y) where Ln represents the elements La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu were prepared. Metallic solutions of these elements in liquid ammonia were obtained by anodic dissolution of the metals. The GICs were prepared by reaction of these solutions with graphite. The preparation prodecure is described. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction.
