Mesogens without terminal chain were obtained by connecting benzo-15-crown-5 and stilbazole with carboxy and propenoic acids. A nematic phase was observed for the later on cooling from 145 to 129 degrees C. Hydrogen bond induced nematic and smectic A phases with wide temperature ranges were observed for mixtures containing para-and meta-alkyloxybenzoic acids as proton donors.
