Spontaneous stepwise thinning of free standing films was observed above the phase transitions SmA - iso, SmA - N in several compounds. The free standing films thickness decreases on heating above these transitions in successive steps. A decrease of thickness occurs at some temperature T-max(N) above which the N-layer film cannot be stable. The film thickness can be described by a power law function of T-max. Mechanism of the phenomenon is discussed.
