The use of recyclable polymer supported benzyltriethylammonium dichloroiodate and tetrachloroiodate reagents in the alpha-halogenation of ketones by batch technique is described. The reagents were prepared by polymer analogous conversions using polystyrene crosslinked with ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate as the carrier matrix. Tetrachloroiodate reagent was found to have higher reactivity compared to dichloroiodate reagent. The effect of reaction conditions such as nature of the solvent, temperature and effective molar concentration of the reagent were investigated.
