Experimental observations on the saturation mass in the capture process of an ordered transverse high gradient magnetic separation matrix
An experiment on saturation capture using a transverse ordered matrix is described. The matrix consists of parallel wires and can rotate around its axis of symmetry so that the wires align with the background field at an angle alpha ranging between 0 degrees and 90 degrees. Using rutile particles as capture material, experiments were performed until the matrix was saturated under different conditions of magnetic field and flow velocity. The objective was to determine experimentally the dependence of saturation mass on the angle between the wires and field directions. Under the described working conditions we found that the saturation mass decreases with decreasing inclination angle, in good agreement with a sin(2) alpha dependence.
