A novel combination of Mirage and FTIR spectroscopy for nondestructive characterization of high performance polymeric materials
Our recent work on the Mirage-FTIR technique has led to the development of new applications, specially for nondestructive evaluation of high absorptivity (black) materials like carbon fibre and coating on carbon fibre mesh, Having succeeded in recording well resolved IR spectra of such materials, we report a preliminary study on nondestructive evaluation of the extent of thermo-oxidative conversion of precursor raw material (special acrylic fibre-SAF) into carbon fibres by vibrational spectroscopy. An attempt has been made to develop a semi-quantitative correlation between the performance characteristics (properties) of carbon fibres produced from different sources (manufacturers) and their IR spectral characteristics. In addition, the Mirage-FTIR technique has also been used as a surface characterization tool for the analysis of surface coatings.
