Ion-exchange resin catalysed etherification of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) with methanol
Etherification of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), 4,7-methano-3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-indene, with methanol was investigated in a batch reactor using cation-exchange resins as catalysts to synthesize an unsaturated methyl ether of DCPD, which possesses an intense floral odour. Kinetics of this reaction was studied in a 1.0 x 10(-4) m(3) capacity autoclave in the temperature range of 353-383 K. The effect of various parameters, such as mole ratio of the reactants, type of the catalyst, catalyst loading, resin particle size etc. on the rate of the reaction was studied. A pseudohomogeneous model was used to explain the batch kinetics and the kinetic parameters were evaluated.
