After the demand was made at SPS-91 for the implementation of operational WPT systems, Reunion Island, a piece of Europe located in the Indian Ocean, appeared to be one of the good possible sites for such demonstrations. Two point-to-point cases to bring power to isolated mountain villages and one HALE case have been selected for study. In December 1994, a major international workshop has allowed meetings between WPT technical experts and representatives from the potential user community, including government officials, and the ISAS functional model of SPS-2000 was shown to the public. As a result of the workshop, it was confirmed that good integration of WPT systems into the natural and social environment will be an issue of prime importance for the future of the projects.
