A wide variety of techniques can be associated with soft chemistry or "chimie douce". In general these methods all have lower preparation temperatures than classical processes. Three general approaches : insertion-deinsertion, organometallic and polymeric precursors are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the synthetic methods are described, and details are given for the synthesis of a variety of compounds using a diol polymerization method.
