Effective utilisation of Prosopis juliflora pods by ensiling with desert grass Lasiurus sindicus
For effective utilisation of Prosopis juliflora pods which are available in plenty in arid regions, desert grass, Lasiurus sindicus, was ensiled with pods in proportions of 25-75%. Urea and molasses were added in one set, while the other set was ensiled without additives. At 50% and 75% levels of P, juliflora pods in the premix, the silages were of good quality and did not require urea and molasses as additives, and were palatable to lactating cattle. At 25% pods level, lactic acid and WSC levels were significantly (P < 0.01) less (0.93-1.71%) than when no chemical additive was added. It was concluded that P. juliflora pods can be effectively used in silage as replacement for urea and molasses at 2 and 8%, respectively, as otherwise required.
