Qualitative Characterization of Variation in Elastic Properties of Solid-Solutions by Acoustic Microscopy
The elastic characteristics of insertion solid solutions (cemented and nitrided steels) and substitution solid solutions (with formula Ga1-xInxSb) with a gradient in composition in a direction perpendicular to the surface have been studied by acoustic microscopy. The variation of the velocity of the Rayleigh mode, revealed by several methods (one non-destructive using different frequencies and another using a high frequency on a cross-section or after successive removals by abrasion), is related to the variation of the chemical bond through the evolution of the constant of elasticity. The gradient observed in acoustic properties is discussed in relation to the microstructure of steels. The study of thr substitution of solid solutions Ga1-xInxSb shows the weakening of the M-III-Sb bond which accompanies the replacement of gallium by indium.
