Application of diffusive internal variables in complex fluids
A thermodynamical phenomenological approach to complex fluids is presented in which the underlying microstructure is accounted for through a so-called internal variable of state. The latter may diffuse. It is shown that both the bulk evolution-diffusion equation of this variable and the required associated boundary conditions can be deduced from a thermodynamical reasoning that exploits the second law in the bulk and at the boundary considered as an interface.
