Catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide by platinum cluster anions
Catalysis of the oxidation reaction CO + 1/2 O-2 --> CO2 by metal clusters is examined by gas phase ion chemistry and mass spectrometry techniques. Small platinum cluster anions, Pt-n(-) (n = 3 - 6), are effective catalysts for the reaction under thermal conditions. The proposed reaction mechanism involves atomic oxygen chemisorbed on the clusters.
