Electromagnetic control of the meniscus shape during casting in a high frequency magnetic field
The meniscus of a Sn-10%Pb charge inside a cold crucible device was shaped utilising a high frequency electromagnetic field. The equilibrium shape and stability of the meniscus was experimentally measured and compared with the predicted results from the mathematical model. The experimental technique used to measure the meniscus shape of the charge and the development of the mathematical model are presented. The observations made during the experiments about the stability of the meniscus shape and the liquid-solid interface of the metal are also discussed.
