Owing to existing potentials and comparatively low costs, by the thermal utilization of biomass a clear contribution -exceeding the present share - could be achieved to meet the energy demand in Germany. Therefore in the following the attempt is made to analyse the technical problems responsible for the at present still low energetic utilization of biomass and based on this to identify future research and development tasks as well as other supporting measures.
