Synthesis of a spin-coupled, mixed-metal double square grid complex [(poap-H)(4)Cu(II)(3)Fe(III)(NO3)](2)(ClO4)(4)(NO3)(4)center dot 2H(2)O (poap N-3-(2-pyridoyl)-2-pyridinecarboxamidrazone with an S=3 ground state, from a mononuclear Fe(III) precursor complex
The mononuclear, high-spin Fe(III) complex[Fe(Hpoap-H)(NO3)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2) acts as a ligand and reacts with copper(II) perchlorate to produce the spin-coupled, mixed-metal, dimeric octanuclear complex [(poap-H)(4)Cu3Fe(NO3)](2)(ClO4)(4)(NO3)(4). 12H(2)O, which contains three Cu(II) centers and one high-spin Fe(III) center in an alkoxy-bridged square gridlike structural arrangement within each subunit. Variable temperature magnetic data indicate antiferromagnetic exchange between copper pairs and ferromagnetic exchange between Fe-Cu pairs. [GRAPHICS]
