ESR and magnetisation experiments have identified a new type of antiferromagnetic pairing of vanadyl groups in the butane oxidation catalyst vanadylpyrophosphate. This pairing is an order of magnitude weaker than the coupling predominantly found in crystalline (VO)(2) P2O7.
