EFFECT OF SUGARCANE MOLASSES ON FERMENTATION OF PIG FECES AND WHEAT-STRAW INOCULATED WITH LACTIC-ACID-PRODUCING BACTERIA
Sugarcane molasses at 0.0, 2.5. 5.0 and 10.0% was added to a premix consisting of 80 parts pig faeces and 20 parts wheat straw on fresh weight basis and the mixture was inoculated with Lactobacillus plantarum and Streptococcus faecalis. After a fermentation period of to days at ambient temperature (18-20 degrees C), the pH dropped in all the wastelages, but the decrease in pH was minimum in wastelage without molasses. The addition of molasses to the premix caused a greater decrease in pH, inhibited the production of volatile fatty acids and stimulated synthesis of lactic acid during fermentation. Molasses at 5% level of the premix was found to be the minimum for production of a good-quality wastelage.
