RECYCLING OF SEASTAR (ASTERIAS-AMURENSIS) WASTE BY COMPOSTING
Mixes of woodwastes (eucalypt) with seastar wastes in ratios (v/v) of 3:1 (bark:seastar) or 4:1 (sawdust:seastar) composted readily over a two month period given sufficient watering and turning. A mixing ratio (v/v) of 5:1 (bark:seastar waste), however, resulted in incomplete degradation of the bark component. No mix showed toxicity to earthworms following composting and excellent growth was shown by lecttuces and tomatoes in a potting composition of 3:1 mix. Concentrations of zinc, boron, iron, magnesium and sodium, however, were well above those allowed by the Australian Standard for potting mixes, AS 3743-1993. The nutrient content of the compost, combined with the excellent aeration and water holding capacity of the bark component, made the material well suited for use as a soil mulching agent.
