PSYCHROPHILIC ANAEROBIC-DIGESTION OF HUMAN WASTE
Human waste was degraded into biogas at a psychrophilic temperature of 15 +/- 1 degrees C. Below 20 degrees C methane production was observed only with the addition of temperature-adapted seed culture. Biogas produced was 0.148 m(3) per kg total solids degraded/per day, at 30 day retention time, and methane content was 57%. Pathogenic bacterial count per 100 ml in the human waste was reduced from an initial 10(24) to 10(3) after the anaerobic and chemical treatments. COD and BOD were reduced by up to 97 and 40% respectively. Total solids reduction was 77%. An integrated anaerobic digester/toilet was designed, fabricated, commissioned and tested.
