ACCUMULATION OF HEAVY-METALS IN SEWAGE-GROWN FISHES
The present study deals with the accumulation of the heavy metals: zinc, lead, copper and chromium in six varieties of sewage-grown fish, silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), common carp (Cyprinus carpio var communis), catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita) and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala). The results showed that the metal contents increased in all the fishes when the BOD loading of sewage was increased There was no relationship between the accumulation pattern of different metals in different fishes and their feeding habits. Metal contents of the fishes did not exceed permissible limits.
