A statistical approach to formulating deep freeze HMAs
Packaging hot melt adhesives are complex mixtures of polymers, resins and waxes. Each of these components contributes to the performance of the adhesives. During formulating, the adhesive chemist often has to compromise between several desirable properties. Deep freeze adhesives are exposed to low temperatures and have to be flexible to prevent brittle failure of adhesive bonds. The development of high speed machinery has also led to the requirement for quick setting adhesives. The objectives of this study were to: (a) investigate the effects of different types of polymers, resins and waxes on the performance properties of a standard deep freeze hot melt adhesive (HMA), and Cb) investigate the influence and synergy of selected raw materials on the performance parameters of the adhesive.
