The observed growth yield (Y-obs) of a nitrifying biofilm metabolizing ammonia in a continuous flow reactor was constant below a fixed biomass concentration of 40-50 mug COD-biomass cm(-2). Beyond this range, an increased Y-obs with the additional accumulation of fixed biomass could be due to a considerable accumulation of inactive materials within the nitrifying biofilm.
