The characteristics of postimpingement diesel spray, part I: Penetration and volume
The characteristics of the impingement spray were experimentally investigated by comparison with those of the free spray. Diesel fuel spray injected into a high-pressure chamber in a cold state was observed by a drum camera that allowed high-speed photography. Spray penetration and volume of the impingement spray analyzed from the photographs are compared with those of the free spray. Also, the effects of injection rate and ambient pressure on the penetration and the volume of the postimpingement spray are discussed. As to the results, it was found that the injection rate and wall distance became important factors of the diesel spray behavior with impingement. As the impingement distance was shorter, the volume of impingement spray approximately increased. Also, the volume of spray impinged before breakup was greater than that of the free spray.
