The study on batch emulsifier-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene with methacrylic acid was conducted. The copolymerization process was followed by gravimetry, infrared, and transmission electron microscopy. The copolymerization mechanism differs from that of styrene with acrylic acid. The effect of solid content on particle size was examined, and it was found that the particle size was increased as the solid content was increased. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
