A novel type of zeolite film catalytic packing for synthesis of ETBE from ethanol and C-4-cut olefin was developed, characterized and evaluated in a catalytic distillation column. The experimental results show that the zeolite film composed of acidic BEA crystals, of a size of about 500 nm, is essentially continuous and free of cracks, and that the packing has better characteristics in both catalysis and the separation of products from reactants that is comparable to that of resin catalysts used in industrial distillation towers.
