Cr-free passivation on ZnNi alloys
ZnNi alloy electrodeposits were passivated with a new Cr-free chromate coatings (CCs) + sealing finish. The films were characterized by analyzing their morphology, roughness, structural parameters, and residual stress. Corrosion behavior was analyzed by salt-spray test and electrochemical techniques. The results indicated that the corrosion resistance of sealed Cr-free CC was competitive with that observed for unsealed, chromate conversion coatings (CCCs). Moreover, heat-treatment has little effect on the protective ability of these films. Thus, these Cr-free CCs + sealing finishes could be used as an alternative to Cr(VI) CCs, which are highly toxic.
