Effect of impact angle and velocity on the fragment size distribution of glass spheres
In this paper, the effects of impact angle and impact velocity on the size distribution of glass fragments obtained in single particle impact experiments are investigated. This study suggests that the critical impact velocity required to initiate Hertzian crack in glass spheres under dynamic impact can be reasonably estimated based on slow compression test data. As the fragment size distribution can be characterised using a two-parameter Weibull equation, a simple approach is proposed to predict the fragment size distribution for glass particles failed under different impact arrangement based on the Weibull parameters.
