Transient Analysis of a Multi-Component Fixed Bed Adsorber and its Application to the Filtration of Gaseous Iodine Compounds by Activated Carbon

Despite the many accomplishments in the analysis of fixed bed adsorbers, an awkward problem still remains when system steepness and nonlinearity of equilibria are caused by single or multiple components, for which numerical computation can no longer be a recourse even with a well-developed personal computer. Here, we present an analytical solution for the transient system with a negligible dispersion effect by approximate linearization of the nonlinear isotherm in sequential adsorption cells. The method is also applied to the adsorption and elution of gaseous iodine compounds. The single-component results were extended further for the estimation of multi-component behavior. The anlytical performative approaches proved to be excellent in speed and reliance without being influenced by the steepness of operation and the nonlinearity of the isotherm.
