Catalytic Dehydration of CH3OH to Dimethyl Ether over Alumina Synthesized from Aluminum Dross
E-mail:
Activated aluminas have been synthesized via two different intermediate precursors, vis., Al(OH)3 and Al(OC3H7)3, from aluminum dross as the starting material and their catalytic behaviors have been investigated as solid acids in the dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether. Only the synthesis method using aluminum isopropoxide gave efficient active catalysts having 100% selectivity for DME and high stability. Based on these results, we infer that the high activity of the Al2O3 catalyst derived from alkoxide is due to the presence of only the γ-phase as well as negligible Na content, in contrast to the co-existence of x- phase Al2O3 and relatively high Na-content in the Al2O3 catalyst derived from hydroxide.
