Second-generation CaCl2 mud system successful in deepwater Gulf of Mexico
A new-generation calcium chloride (CaCl2)/polymer-based drilling fluid has been developed and used successfully in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico (GOM), The fluid system was developed specifically to address operational problems associated with drilling the highly reactive, gumbo-laden clays found throughout the GOM. The new fluid system eliminates shaker-screen blinding experienced by first-generation CaCl2 systems.
