To develop a knowledge base of sucker-rod pumps, a clear sucker-rod pump was instrumented in the laboratory. An instrumented down-hole pump is planned. A key element is measuring the compression-chamber pressure-pressure inside the pump barrel. Analyses of the compression-chamber pressure provide a better understanding of events during the time when both valves are closed. Techniques are being developed for real-time diagnosis of fillage and gas locking.
