Two-fluid modeling of spray penetration and dispersion under diesel engine conditions
In this work, a two-fluid Eulerian-liquid Eulerian-gas (ELEG) model for diesel sprays is employed to carry out computations of liquid penetrations in nonvaporizing and vaporizing sprays, vapor penetration in vaporizing sprays, and spray dispersion angles. Comparisons of computed and measured results are made for a wide range of conditions. Adequate agreement is obtained in all cases. In the case of modeling the liquid penetration in vaporizing sprays, a lack of understanding of the atomization process is shown to be a limitation. The two-fluid modeling approach is shown to give numerically converged results for liquid penetration and spray dispersion angle, unlike the Lagrangian-drop Eulerian-fluid (LDEF) approach which is widely employed in multidimensional spray models.
