Synthesis and Performance of Reactive Light Stabilizers for Weather-Resistant UV-Curable Coatings

In this study we investigated whether the weathering performance of UV-curable coatings could be improved significantly by using both a reactive light stabilizer and an optimized photoinitiator combination. A reactive light stabilizer (UCHA) containing a UV absorbance group, a radical scavenger, and acryl groups in the same molecule was synthesized and its performance investigated. Experimental studies of the UV-curing kinetics indicated that a combination of Irgacure 819 and Darocure 1173, in a ratio of 1:3, provided the best performance and cost. The outdoor resistance of the coated films was tested in an accelerated QUV weatherometer; IR spectroscopy was used to monitor quantitatively the chemical changes that occurred during QUV irradiation. The exposure results obtained with UCHA showed that the UV-curable coatings are useful in outdoor applications.
