New methods for studying chemical reaction mechanisms in two-phase liquid/liquid and liquid/solid systems are still being developed. This article provides a brief review of the literature, discusses the relevance of the techniques to process development, and gives two examples of industrial experience. Some implications for training requirements in this multidisciplinary area are also discussed.
