Membrane electrode assembly for proton exchange membrane fuel cells prepared by sputter deposition in air and transfer method
We propose a novel method to form catalyst layers on polymer electrolyte membranes. A porous platinum layer was sputter-deposited on a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) sheet in low-pressure air. This thin platinum layer was then transferred to a polymer electrolyte membrane by hot pressing. By this method, a continuous thin porous platinum layer was formed on a polymer electrolyte membrane. This platinum layer has high performances as an electrocatalyst of proton exchange membrane fuel cells because it has a large surface area and permeates reactants. Casting of electrolyte solution on the catalyst layer before the transferring process improves the ionic connection between the catalyst layer and the polymer electrolyte membrane. Moreover, depositing a gold layer on the membrane electrode assembly increases the electrical conductivity. (c) 2005 The Electrochemical Society.
