γ-Ray Irradiation Induced Grafting of Fluorinated Agents onto Polyethylene

Grafting of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is an important method used in the modification of functional group. In this study, the γ-ray irradiation-induced grafting of trifluoroacetic acid allyl ester onto PE was investigated. γ-Ray irradiation causes molecular bond scission and produces free radical sites on the PE. The grafting of a commercial LLDPE with trifluoroacetic acid allyl ester (TFAA, 30 wt%) was performed at different doses from a 60Co source of γ-rays (0, 10, 30, 60, 100, 500 kGy). This process was performed in a m-xylene solution to obtain a homogeneous dispersion of the monomer into the polyethylene matrix. The microstructure of modified polymer film was characterized through FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. The thermal properties of the grafted products were also studied using TGA. The surface morphology, which was revealed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, was dependent on the degree of γ-ray irradiation.
