Generally afforestation seedling mulching mat has been used to prevent weeds around a young tree and provide good environment for a young tree, and maintain nourishment on the spot where a young tree is planted. However, it is a fact that plastic materials are using for that purpose. It is not easy to remove them from the site where they has been used and brings environmental problems when they are discarded and dissolved in the forest. They contaminate soils and watercourses. This study has been carried to find a way to substitute plastic film with paper materials that are environment friendly and biodegradable for making afforestation seedling mulching mat. Optimization conditions of base paper for the mulching mat were obtained.
