State-resolved differential cross-section measurement of Cl+C2H6 -> HCl+C2H5 reaction using single-beam velocity mapping
The bimolecnlar reaction of atomic chlorine with ethane at a collision energy of 0.36 eV is studied in a single-beam experiment, using velocity mapping of a state-selected reaction product. The differential cross-section for HCl(nu = 0,J= 1) product is directly determined from its Abel-inverted velocity map image. Our results are similar to previous measurements of the differential cross-section and suggest that the HCl(nu = 0,J = 1) scattering is broad with a side-scattered peak. This Letter demonstrates the power of velocity mapping for measuring differential cross-sections for reactions for which one of the reactants is produced photolytically.
