The deprotonation of the radical cation of P-cresol, a model of tyrosine residues, has been studied kinetically in the gas phase. The reaction has revealed the operation of competitive deprotonation sites depending on the strength of the base, as shown by an FT-ICR study using d-labelling. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V.
