A significant effect of molecular structure on the formation of surface relief grating (SRG) was found for novel azobenzene-based photochromic amorphous molecular materials, N,N'-bis[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]-N,N'-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine and N,N-bis[4-(phenylazo)phenyl]-N',N'-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine. The results provide helpful information about SRG formation.
